Rhapsody in E flat major, Op. 119 No. 4 Victor Schiøler Vol. 7 © The first disc in the seventh volume contains music by Chopin, the composer with by far the greatest representation in Schiøler’s discography. In the autumn of 1956, Schiøler made a complete recording of Chopin’s 24 preludes op. 28 for HMV, and the plans to issue yet another installment in the Danacord Schiøler series arose not least from the desire to make this major achievement available to the public. According to Niels Ravn’s and René Aagaard’s detailed Victor Schiøler discography, the recording was issued on a 12″ LP with the catalog number KBH 1021, and since it was highly unlikely that such an important Danish record release had not found its way into the Royal Library’s record collection, it should have been a simple matter to obtain it from there. However, the Royal Library came with the disheartening news that they did not have the record. Neither did Danmarks Radio, Victor Schiøler’s son or various record collectors who were contacted in the hope of tracking it down. It also turned out that the disc, very unusually, had not been mentioned, let alone reviewed, in the Danish Music Journal, Furthermore, no one could recall having seen anything other than a 7″ release (HMV 7EBK 1009) of six of the preludes (nos 4-8, 15 and 16). Reluctantly, one had to face the sad fact that the complete recording of all 24 preludes had for some reason never been released. However, the disappointment was not to last. René Torning Andersen of the Royal Library had not given up hope and had searched through large amounts of uncatalogued material in the Royal Library’s possession. And his efforts were crowned with success when a test pressing of the record in question appeared from the piles. It turned out that the record had been rejected by the record company at the time due to overdrive, but this error has now been corrected by Claus Byrith using editing tools that were not available in the 1950s. This means that for 18 of the 24 preludes, the present release – based on the test pressing – is not just a reissue, but the first release ever, and that Schiøler’s interpretation of the preludes as an integral work can now be heard for the first time.
