Boum! (1938) Husum CD 2008 © For any who are new to the festival Rarities of Piano Music, Husum is a small town on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. It is the chief town of the North Friesian district. Many Danish names on shops and in churchyards bear witness to the history of the region. The castle was built in the 16th century, and was originally just outside the town, which explains the “vor” in its name, Schloss vor Husum. Today it is a museum and cultural centre, as well as housing the regional music school. It was the head of piano, the Berlin pianist and teacher Peter Froundjian, who started the festival in 1987, believing that there was scope for a series which featured music that was hardly ever heard in the usual circuit of concerts and festivals. Twenty-two years later the supply of interesting music, and of pianists of high quality who are prepared to learn it for what may be a unique performance, shows no sign of being exhausted.
